The Ultimate Guide to Serving Boards: Perfect for Charcuterie and Tapas Boards, Inspired by Scotland
Share
We recently organised a cosy BBQ and, as always, we filled one of our favourite serving boards, this time with a delightful selection of cheeses and other treats and delightful whiskeys. During the celebration, we were asked how to remove the colours and scents from the board after use. In this blog, we share our tips and tricks for putting together the perfect snack board or tapas board, inspired by the rich flavours of Scotland, and how to keep your serving board clean and fresh.
What is a serving board?
A serving board is a platter on which various snacks are presented, ranging from cheese and cold cuts to fruit, nuts and fish. The goal is to present a varied and attractive spread that is perfect for any occasion, whether it's an informal drink or an extensive tapas evening.
Putting together the perfect Scottish snack board:
- Cheese: Choose a mix of Scottish cheeses such as Mull of Kintyre Cheddar, Lanark Blue and Caboc. These cheeses offer a rich and unique taste experience that goes perfectly with a snack board.
- Cold cuts: Add Scottish cold cuts such as wild boar salami, haggis bites and smoked salmon. These traditional treats bring an authentic Scottish flair to your board.
- Fruit and nuts: Fresh fruit such as blackberries, apples and pears adds colour and sweetness, while nuts such as hazelnuts and walnuts provide a crunchy texture.
- Bread and crackers: A variety of Scottish oatcakes and oat biscuits gives your guests the chance to mix and dip.
- Dips and sauces: Add extra flavour with dips such as whisky marmalade, honey mustard sauce and cranberry chutney.
The tapas board: A Mediterranean feast
A tapas board is a fantastic way to add a Mediterranean theme to your celebration. Fill your tapas board with:
- Olives: Green and black, possibly marinated.
- Spanish cheeses: Manchego and other local cheeses.
- Chorizo and Serrano ham: Typical Spanish cold cuts.
- Pickled vegetables: Grilled peppers, artichokes and mushrooms.
- Tapas: Small dishes such as albondigas (meatballs), tortilla de patatas and gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns).
Tips for caring for your serving board
After a fun evening, you naturally want your serving board to be clean and fresh again for the next use. Here are some tips:
- Clean it right away: Clean the board right after use with warm water and mild soap. Avoid soaking the board to prevent warping.
- Use lemon and salt: For stubborn odours and stains, you can use half a lemon and coarse salt. Rub the board with the lemon and salt and then rinse it well.
- Oil the board: Keep your wooden serving board in top shape by regularly oiling it with a food-safe oil such as mineral oil or walnut oil. This helps nourish the wood and protect it against stains and odours.
- Avoid the dishwasher: Never put your wooden serving board in the dishwasher. The heat and water can damage and warp the wood.
